Show Recommendations

There is a lot of music happening this week(end), including MEISA’s own awesome acoustic showcase. To top is off, for the first time in ages, I’m actually free to go out there & enjoy it. So I’m pretty much bouncing out of my seat (although it does make typing rather difficult). Let’s go chronologically, shall we?

Wednesday 11.30.2011 - Sounds of Venus Occupy Great Scott

Sounds of Venus is once again playing a pretty stellar lineup, opening up for Ivan & Alyosha and Hey Rosetta! at Great Scott Wednesday night. Sounds of Venus is an alternative rock band composed of five Berklee students who occasionally switch up the instruments they are playing on stage. Lead vocalists Nick Susi and Paige Califano are able to present a wider range of vocals than most other bands in the area,  changing between each of them taking the lead and building harmonies - all the while building over undeniably rock guitars and subtle textures, with a steadily building energy drawing you in through their set. PhotobucketThursday 12.1.2011 - TMM Issue 26 Drop: Where’s the Band? Featuring Brian Fallon of the Gaslight Anthem and Matthew Pryor of the Get Up Kids

This show is the result of collaboration between some of the most badass groups on campus (no bias towards MEISA or TMM, at alllllll). But, really it’s going to be absolutely insane with both Brian Fallon and Matthew Pyror performing acoustic sets in the relative comforts of afterHOURs. There are only a few things more perfect in life than being serenaded in a small, intimate setting, by the lead signer of an insane band. Tickets are NU only and available now (for FREE). More info available here.

Friday 12.2.2011

One of those nights that really makes me wish I had a time turner, Harry Potter style. There are a lot of awesome shows this night, I will be attending Love In Stockholm’s surprise show at the Lizard Lounge. But City and Colour is playing House of Blues and I know another eboard member mentioned being excited for Tan Vampires at Church.

PhotobucketSo with all this going on, how did I chose Love In Stockholm? Well it could be because I am a sucker for any band that has a horns section, the fact that they have a song about Allston, it could be that I didn’t know about this show until last minute (and I didn’t think I would get to see them anytime soon), the promising bike ride that far into Cambridge, or this song. Or it could be all of those, and I am in fact growing into a mature adult that makes informed decisions…

Saturday 12.3.2011 - King Orchid at Great Scott

I always encourage people to go to King Orchid shows. Really, always. Refer to the band of the week article here about why I love them SO MUCH.

I haven’t been out in over a month (work, work, & work) and it was also my 21st birthday, so naturally I went on a ridiculous music bender.

Musical occurances? (see me in person for uh…other stories)

1) Got tickets to Love in Stockholm on 10/28 at the Mid East Down - YAAAAAY Birthday Presents - Facebook Event

2) Caught Bear Language/Helicopria/Art Decade @ Church. (I missed Supervolcano on this bill. Sad.)

3) Scooped Movers & Shakers at TT the Bear’s Place. (They killed, in case there was any doubt, & if you still don’t believe me just check them out at the Mid East downstairs on 10/15 - then maaaaybe you’ll learn to stop doubting me, jerk.)

New obsession alert for Helicopria - Helicopria are a progressive rock band that juxtaposes lofty melodies and an entrancingly soft lyrical quality with some pretty shred nasty guitars.  Personal favorite off the record is Paragon, make sure you listen!

Also, you can download their new EP for free RIGHT HERE. It was just released Thursday (9/15)!

Local Band of the Week - King Orchid

King Orchid

Okay, so I am late on this, my apologies. I sat down to write it, tuned into King Orchid’s bandcamp and well there went my ability to do anything else. They have had this effect on me before, so I should have known better. In fact, they always have the ability to distract me from everything else going on around me. The first night I saw King Orchid I was show hopping between TTs and The Middle East Upstairs. In between sets at TTs I wandered over to the Middle East to check out what was going on and walked in to something magical. My ears were immediately greeted with a perfectly controlled chaos of rock music. I managed to push my way to a location with a view of the stage and was immediately confused - there were only two dudes on stage… certainly there were more, how had I missed the fact that there was no bass guitar? (Here is hoping certain other bass players won’t disown me for admitting that!) While I am typically a fan of really heavy baselines, I have never missed anything from one of their performances. The energy and enthusiasm they bring to the stage is phenomenal. As is their hair. If there were a competition for Best Boston Band Hair…. but back to the point - honestly, if you found another person that worked on stage with them, I am pretty sure the world universe would implode.

What have I learned about them since that fateful night? Well the lyrics to all their songs, obvs. But also that those two “dudes” are Guitarist Doug Wartman and Drummer Zack Fierman. Although identifying them by their instruments may not always be helpful, because while I was in Florida rediscovering my southern accent, I heard a rumor that Saturday night they switched instruments to perform a White Stripes cover. (and yes, I am using this as an opportunity to beg them to do it again, preferably this Thursday night). Doug & Zack met in college started playing together in 2008 and released their 7 track album I Sound Much Better in the Sun in October of 2008. The album is available for download at King Orchid’s bandcamp & the first two tracks you can snag for free.

Also come check them out live at Great Scott this Thursday - RSVP on Facebook

-They are even giving away a piece of merch to each person. Sweet
